In Port-au-Prince, a man's body was found near the La Saline slum adjacent to the main port facilities. Years of corruption, neglect and abuse of institutions by the Aristide government left a legacy of such worsening impoverishment that some families felt compelled to dump corpses by the roadside. Aristide was driven from power by an armed rebellion and massive protests.
