France has sent close to 850 soldiers and gendarmes as part of a U.N. authorised stabilisation force in the wake of the violence following the departure of deposed president Jean-Bertrand Aristide. More than 350 people were killed in an armed insurrection against Aristide and through violence committed by his "Chymères" militia.
